What is state of matter? State of matter tells you weather a material is a solid, a liquid, or a gas. Matter is anything that take up space and has mass. Anything we can taste, or smell is matter. Food, books, our body is matter.
Our thoughts and emotions are not matter because they dont take up space.


What is an atom? An atom is the smallest particle that makes up a given part of matter. When two or more atoms combine, they form a particle called a Molecule
When hydrogen and oxygen atoms combine they form a water molecule. Most matter is made up of atoms and molecules.


Matter in motion
Random motion of tiny particles of matter is called brownian motion. The idea that the particles of all matter are in constant, random motion is called Kinetic Energy.
What is Kinetic Energy? The energy of moving particles is the process of kinetic energy.


Temperature and heat
The temperature of a material is an indirect measure of the particles that make up the material of the average of the kinetic energy. As the temperature falls, the particles slow down.
What is absolute zero? The temperature at which the particles of matter would cease to move.

What is heat? Heat is energy that is transferred from matter at a lower temperature.
As heat transfer can make you shiver on a cold day, can keep you comfortable on a hot day.

How does a solid become a liquid. Solids turn into liquids through temperature change.In the case of water solid ice turns into liquid  water because the temperature rises above 0 degress. The heat energy always moves from a warm place to a cold place. When you get a solid hot the molecules go faster and harder, until they start breaking apart and moving around. Thats when a solid melts and becomes a liquid.  One type of solid is an crystalline solid. The particles in a crystalline solid have a regular repeating pattern. Some solids turns into liquids depending their density. Freezing. The process in which a substance changes from a liquid to a solid is called freezing. When a liquid is cooled, the average energy decreases. The amount of heat removed is great enough than the attractive forces between molecules that are together, and the liquid freezes into a solid. The temperature of a freezing liquid, remains constant, even when more heat is removed.
